Baby birds - fledglings.

Spring has nearly sprung and we are receiving many calls about baby birds called fledglings.

The majority of birds found on the ground are not orphans and have not fallen out of their nest, they have chosen to jump or climb down on to the ground.

Many native and non native birds leave their nest before they are ready to fly. They're parents continue to feed them on the ground and may fiercely defend them if disturbed.

Many people pick up these birds thinking they need to be rescued.

Before intervening check:

Is the bird fully covered in feathers (including downy feathers)?

Is the bird alert?

Can the bird hop about?

Are it's parents near by?

If all of these things are true, monitor the bird but please leave it be!

If the bird is on a road, or could be in harms way you can move it to the nearest bush or tree
